Elaine Scarry, 2001. On Beauty and Being Just.
Would be wise to read again. Kelp forests and Matisse sketches discussed. In the fewest words possible, I take her to suggest that beauty exists as a resource, which seems to underpin her argument that a beautiful diamond cave should continue to exist even if the vast majority of the world will never see it. I wonder if the existence of the cave directly benefits all who merely hear of it, because it enriches their world, imagined, real, it inspires the self, and I would wager that it is that which is important, perhaps less so that other people actually get to see it. I wonder too how that has changed in the age of social media.
